The twins and their family were having a big reunion in my hometown, so I headed home to join in the fun. Now, there’s something you should know about the twins’ family…collectively, they are the most active family I’ve ever met. I’m serious. You walk into their house and the frenetic energy within is enough to knock the air out of you. Constant activity. Constant discussions. Constant laughter. Constant fun. Even though I find that I have to physically gear myself up and mentally prepare for a day at their house, it’s one of my favorite places to be.
Upon my arrival, what was one of the first topics of discussion? When we were going to work out. That in itself isn’t so surprising. However, there must have been another flux in the time-space continuum, because I was the one who brought it up. In my 26 years of history with these girls, never had I ever initiated physical activity with them. The transformation taking place in me because of working out with Melissa wasn’t just in my body. I was a changed woman inside and out. And the twins loved it.
So, later that weekend, I showed up at their house in my workout gear, ready for an adventure. There were five of us who were going to work out together, and it was decided that each person would come up with a station for a circuit we would all go through. Now, in the past, you wouldn’t have found me volunteering to exercise with the twins in the first place. But if you had, you certainly wouldn’t have found me actually participating in coming up with the workout plan. But, my friends, that was before I had spent six months working out with Melissa and a week planning out exercise routines in the loony bin. If I could come up with workouts in the psych ward, I could certainly come up with one station for our circuit.
For some reason, when it came down to it, I chose one of the harder exercises that Melissa makes me do. We had some weights on hand (of course we did…their house is littered with various fitness equipment from over the years), so I set up my station where you get into push-up position and then alternate rows with the weights without rotating your body. The best part was that after I demonstrated it, the entire group of personal trainers and fitness gurus collectively said, “Ooooooooo.” I scored some major points with that one, and I gotta say, it felt good to be one of the crowd.
I was no longer just a spectator. I was no longer just a cheerleader. I was a participant. Sure, they all did twice as many pushups as me, and did box hops on a vertical twice as high as I could, and left me in the dust when it came to squats…and basically outperformed me in every possible way. By the end of the first circuit, I was drenched in sweat and breathing so heavily I thought I was gonna pass out, and they were all ready to go through it another two times. But the point is, I was taking part, and it was so cool. In fact, I may have even enjoyed myself. Shhh, don’t tell anyone.

I would say, yah, you were no spectator, no cheerleader…..you were one of the personal trainers! I really was blown away with your workout skills……..and drive!!! As you said, you desired to “buffet your body” both inside and out. That was so much fun, and according to you, it sounds like you “enjoyed yourself”, too.
